All the posts here about illegitimacy and Y-DNA tracking encourages me to ask a question that has bothered me for some time. Perhaps someone who understands DNA analysis can explain this to me.
Since women do not carry the Y chronosome and thus cannot trace their paternal roots through DNA testing, how is it that a female child's paternity can be verified through DNA testing?
It's done using any chromosome pairs other than chromosome 23
(the XX/XY one). The others have parts which come half from the
mother and half from the father, so if you know what the child
has and what the mother has contributed, you can work out what
bits the father must have contributed. And if those bits match
those of an alleged father then he probably is the father - or
it might be his identical twin. :-)
