For what it's worth, I personally know 2 Rev. Dr.s in Canada, and
neither have anything to do with the Roman Catholic Church or Church
of England or even Methodist. They are Presbyterians. And now I
await the criticism telling me we are talking about Britain not Canada
as happened the last time I mentioned something on this list.
Doesn't matter in the slightest what flavour of christianity it is,
where it is now situated, or where it came from, the 'top brass' will
tend to be more Revd Dr than Revd Mr. To get to be top brass you may
have to demonstrate many qualities but the basic requirement is a
demonstration of more intellectual power than most. Top brass always
have difficult decisions to make, and have to take many factors into
account. That's also what has got to be done to get a decent
doctorate. Ergo, someone who got a doctorate when young is on the fast
track for the top slots when older.
That doesn't necessarily mean they will make it to the top, or that
folk without a doctorate won't make it to the top. But in any large
organisation ticking the boxes in the right order is the way to get
noticed by the present top brass who control selection of future top
brass.
There are some small strange persuasions under the general umbrella of
christianity and for them the tendencies may not be apparent. For the
large groups they'll all take on the tendencies of large organisations
to look at paperwork and c.v.s before considering any candidate as a
person. If you haven't ticked the boxes you won't even make the long
list, let alone the short list.
But if you really want to find Revd Dr by the bucketload, any
university theology department or any seminary will have them as
teachers.
