I am astonished at the amount of vitriol that has been poured into
this thread, considering that the original post was a simple, on-
topic, request for help with a well-intentioned project.
I completely agree with Ian that a wiki is simply a content management
and, like any piece of software, can be applied to real-world problems
very well or very badly. I have posted here about my own experiments
with using a wiki as a single-user content management system for
genealogogical research: an application for which it has some
advantages over any other software that I have found (as well as some
disadvantages).
Also some of the things said about wikis, which seem to be talking
specifically about Wikipedia, are nonsense. I again agree with Ian
that Wikipedia is a good place to go for a general introduction to a
huge range of subjects. Comparisons with other big encyclopaedias
(albeit based on a very limited sample of articles) have concluded
that it has about the same amount of errors. It is an encyclop(a)edia
and doesn't claim to be a learned journal: indeed, it specifically
excludes original research. Therefore, comparisons with such peer-
reviewed journals is hardly a fair comparison. I would contend that
the invention of Wikipedia makes the world a better place, not a worse
one!
Cheers
Steve West
