I recently purchased the book: My Ancestors were Congregationalists by
David J. H. Clifford.
My question is: How does one actually use this resource? He list
numerous locations and names for old meeting places, etc... However,
no matter how I enter this information on any website or search engine
it draws nothing related to what I'm eventually hope to find.
I have no idea how to use what he has provided, although I assume
there is something I'm missing.
He lists types of original documentary resources which are available in
archive offices or in churches in the UK. You cannot realistically hope to
do all your genealogy on the Internet! http://www.genuki.org.uk/gs/
At present, that is the only way I can do as I am in the US and can't
even afford to travel around here, much less overseas. The digital
information is vast, but still not always would I'm looking for.
Are you near a Family History Center? If you don't know, look up your
location here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp
If you have not used one before, you may be surprised at the range of
records they have available on microfilm. A vastly larger collection
than is available on any website, as well as helpful volunteers. The
catalog is online here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
Check it out and see whether any of the materials mentioned in the
book are included.
If for any reason these links don't work, try the main site
http://www.familysearch.org and look under the "Library" tab at the
top.
The FHCs are run by the Mormon church, but you do not need to be a
church member to use them, and in my experience there is no effort to
proselytize visitors. There is no charge, but if you need to have a
microfilm sent from the main library in Salt Lake City (which you
usually will) then you have to pay a few dollars to cover the postage.
