I'm looking for my g-g-grandfather Edouard Nickels in either the 1841
or 1851 census. Finding his father isn't a problem, and I have his
mother in 1851, but I can't find any trace of Edouard from his birth in
1829 (in Paris) until 1857 when he marries in Shoreditch.
Edouard's father is Christopher Frederick Nickels. His mother is (I
think) Jane Cliff Fuller. His father seems to have left his mother by
1839, so I guess it's possible his mother isn't using the surname
Nickels in 1841, although she does in 1851.
I don't think Edouard spent more than a year or two after his birth in
Paris, but I'm not sure. He's usually listed as Edward, but sometimes
uses the French spelling of his name, especially when he's working as a
photographer and artist in the 1860's.
According to a family bible, Edouard had other relatives (brothers &
sisters?) Joseph b. 1827, a brother Frederick Samuel and a sister Jane
Emma, but they could have died young as we've never found any trace of
them in any census or BMD.
If anyone can help me find Edouard in 1841/1851, or Jane in 1841 I'd be
very grateful.
what occupations?
in 1841 he *could* be a live in apprentice
and in 1851 a journeyman anywhere in Europe or the colonies

Edouard works as a photographer and artist, but he wouldn't be doing this
in 1841. The first record we have for him is in 1858 when he's in East
Dalston.
His father, Christopher is an India Rubber manufacturer, taking out about
30 patents up to the late 1850's. He worked in Paris for about 2-3 years
around the time of Edouard's birth in 1829. Christopher is certainly back
in Lambeth in 1837.
Christopher's wife, Jane is living separately from his father by 1841. In
1851 she is listed as an Annuitant in Colchester. As Edouard is so hard
to find, we're wondering if Christopher's wife Jane wasn't his mother,
but that Edouard was born to a French woman and lived in France for some
time. But that's just guesswork, we haven't managed to find any French
records despite friends in Paris searching for us.
very likely to be with grandparents or an aunt or uncle if his parents
marriage was broken
Hugh W
Edouard's grandparents were both dead in 1841. It's possible he could be
with his uncle Benjamin Nickels in 1841, but he's definitely not with him in
1851. I haven't searched for Benjamin in 1841.
