I now see that in the 1871 census Joseph Griffin's birthplace was given as Birmingham and not Burmarsh, Kent, and he was 8 years old. I therefore suggest the Joseph you found at FreeBMD registered at Birmingham was probably him. Why in 1881 his birthplace should be shown as being Burmarsh, Kent, I have no idea - but that is the nature of censuses, since very often there are numerous contradictions.
This is why I agree with the proposition that you should look at ALL relevent censuses.
yes Roy it is a secondary source with copying errors after all
merely showing a path to BDM data
I believe the earliest census for an individual is the most likely to be accurate in detail
