Can anyone please offer suggestions as to how I would find out the
name of a ship that departed London for Australia on 6 December
1890. I believe they left from London as their residence prior to
departing was Rotherhithe.
All I have is the inscription in the front of an old Bible stating
that it was presented to my Great Grandparents by their uncle on the
occasion of their departing England on that date.
Hopefully the passenger list will offer some clues as to their
"history".

Why do you think that? It might include some family members you don't
know about, such as a child who died en route, but nothing about the
'jistory' of the couple. However, if you want to know about shipping
the first place to look is Lloyds List.

Were there such things as Passports or Travel Documents in
existence at that time?
I have their Marriage Certificate and Death Certificates but cannot
get past that point, so am hopeful there may be some leads in
shipping records.

Non sequitur. If you have their marriage and death certificates you
already have the leads to their 'history'. Why not do the obvious and
look them up in censuses? Shipping is irrelevant to their prior
'history'.

If you want to make positive use of this newsgroup, pay attention to
Hugh's response to your post. Also go to the Genuki website and in
particular read the newbie's guide apropos researching in the UK.
Obviously if you are in Australia you can't rush about archives in the
UK, and however much you can do online there will be things offline.
However, if you are going to ask SKS to do some work in offline
archives, then the least you can do is give people very specific
questions to look into. People won't spend hours on sorting through
vague questions but they might spend minutes looking for something
specific.
