Shipping Records from England

Can anyone please offer suggestions as to how I would find out the name of a ship that departed London for Australia on 6 December 1890. I believe they left from London as their residence prior to departing was Rotherhithe.
All I have is the inscription in the front of an old Bible stating that it was presented to my Great Grandparents by their uncle on the occasion of their departing England on that date.
Hopefully the passenger list will offer some clues as to their "history". Were there such things as Passports or Travel Documents in existence at that time?
I have their Marriage Certificate and Death Certificates but cannot get past that point, so am hopeful there may be some leads in shipping records.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am not asking for anyone to do work for me, just point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Ray Green
