As an encouragement, there was a story in my wife's family that some relative
had been a Lady -in-Waiting to Queen Victoria's mother. Quite by chance I
discovered that her 5g uncle, General Sir John Spink, had married Charlotte
McCumming, who was indeeed a L-i-W to the Duchess of Kent. So the story had
a basis in fact.
