Right, Bert Weaver, I've had enough of this. You're posting from
westnet.com.au (which uses Giganews as its downstream provider, but
that's irrelevant to this). The Terms and Conditions of that ISP
(http://www.westnet.com.au/about/legal-information/services/general_01.aspx)
include this clause:

2.4 The Customer agrees that it will not:

* Utilise an account for any fraudulent or criminal activities,
including, but not limited to, transmission of copyrighted
materials, illegal, threatening, and obscene or libelous
material, or any instructions which, if implemented, might
cause damage or injury to any person or property;
(...)
* Engage in activities which are regarded as abuse or misuse
of Westnet resources, including but not limited to sending
spam or unsolicited commercial email. What constitutes
"abuse" or "misuse" is determined by Westnet in its sole
discretion;

* Post to or transmit to or via the Website any content that
interferes with, interrupts, harasses, threatens, menaces,
inhibits or offends any other person;

So far, we've got you on:

* Posting libelous material
* Abusive activities (cyberstalking)
* Posting content that harasses, menaces and offends.

You have three choices:

1. Become polite, civil and constructive in your postings
2. Go away
3. Lose your Westnet account.

You choose.

John
I'll trust you'll use the same methodology in finding any of Dons
transgressions, including his responses that do nothing more to further
a thread than to attack posters for being pathetic and ignorant and
telling them to bugger off. Some might see that as harrassment and certainly abuse.

You probably wouldn't do that though would you? If not, that would be very, hypocritical. Hypocricy tells us a lot about a persons character and whether that character can be trusted.

Cheers
Simon

Why ask John to do your dirty work? My email address and ISP is no secret. You want it done, have the balls to do it yourself.

Sorry Don, with all those genealogical skills, logic and simple comprehension must have escaped you. Not to mention pure manners (balls?)

At no point did I ask John to do my dirty work. I have no interest in shopping people to their ISP because I take a dislike to what they say.

Nor do I become a raving hypocrite and have a go at people for not killfiling me because they find my objection objectionable when I could have killfiled the initial poster and their ignored their objectionable comment.

I presume you'll now bore us all to tears with another two hour anecdote...

Incidentally, what I do on this newsgroup is no more and no less than what I did when teaching medical students and others, and it wasn't objectionable then.

Hrm. We're not medical students. You don't have a duty of care over us. You can take your criticism and do whatever you want with it.

If people come onto this newsgroup with sloppy work, no thinking, and expecting others to run around after them for free.

Yes yes, I understand your position, you'd much rather tell someone off than to impart an ounce of your years of wisdom. Quite a strange thing to not want to share any knowledge. You don't even like to show someone in the right direction.

Who are you to tell what someone has thought or not? Perhaps they're newbies. Newbies often don't know the right questions to ask. Google is dire if you can't type in the right question. But speaking to another human, even by email, can be quite rewarding especially if you take it at face value - an honest, open question, asking for advice.

I'll tell them it is not good enough to get anywhere in the subject and they had better bugger off somewhere quiet and rethink whether they are suited to study the subject.

We all had to be taught something at some point. Eventually, it clicks. Im quite astounded at your position. It's really rather harsh. Perhaps you don't have the time. In which case, shut up and stop criticising. Otherwise, take some advice from John Prentice and learn to be polite and forgiving.

A newsgroup isn't a six foot bantu with a machete wanting to cut off your head in deepest darkest africa while lions growl or some tosh like that. It's just a newsgroup.

? Whether they realise it
or not, that is a kindness. It is simply not true, and never will be true, that anybody can be competent in one particular subject merely because they fancy doing the subject. If the subject isn't for them, they should go off and find something in their lives which is for them.

I agree that not everybody is suited to it. But again, telling them to bugger off because you don't like the question is incredibly rude and not a kindness. I've done quite a bit of research into my family tree. Despite your misgivings, I also found quite a bit of information from one of the graveyards. If I didn't, well, I'd chalk it down to experience.

Sometimes people just need a guiding hand. The reason they may ask dumb questions, is because they don't know what questions they need to be answering.

Years ago an uncle of mine who was formidably competent in engineering came round to help me repair my car. I was a poor married student at the time and couldn't afford garages. He took one look and bellowed: 'You're bloody useless at cars. Get out of the way and let me do it.' When he was finished he told me to bugger off and earn enough money to pay a garage, and never again lift the bonnet and fiddle with what was under it. In all the decades since I never have lifted the bonnet or fiddled with what is under it. My ferocious uncle taught me a very valuable lesson and I remain grateful for it long after his death.

I think that's actually a very bad lesson and explains where you get your ideoligies from.

For sure, there are people who are just so totally inept. I'll turn my hand to anything though. I'll never wallpaper anything, but that's only because I've never been shown. I've probably seen enough and could probably research enough to be able to try once on a blank wall in private where no one will ever know, but I don't think I'd have the eye for it frankly.

I recognise when Im not good. But depending on what you do under the bonnet, there's not a lot that can go wrong. Generally it's a case of being prepped, studying the work shop manual, seeing if other people have had similar experiences, having the necessary tools, asking an experienced friend (like how much is too much sealant?) and having a back out plan. Just what were you doing that under the bonnet?

I wouldn't touch the brakes, but I've changed radiators, thermostats, rocker box gaskets etc.

I suspect your uncle was a little too ferocious. But hey, some people just can't be arsed and don't want to take the risk. But it's incredibly rewarding.

Some people simply can't cope with some things, Not with the best will in the world. If people can't cope with genealogy, the sooner they are told so the sooner they can move to something they can cope with and where their contribution to society will be valued and respected.

You can't judge that though in one posting.

I'll end with the story of the medical student I booted off the course. Positively totally bloody hopeless at medical matters. He was only on the course because his father insisted. He thanked me for booting him out. Then went off to read law, and got a First in just two years. He was no dumbo. He needed, and got, the help of somebody who could stand up to his father and tell him to bugger off.

But you knew this medical student, and I assume knew him for at least a few weeks. You're making a diagnosis and a dirty assumption based on very little information mainly from one or two posts.

I hope you now understand the process, But if you don't and still want to make a complaint, then do it yourself and don't try to hide behind somebody else.

I've never said I wanted to make a complaint. I was just asking John not to be a hypocrite.

Cya
Simon
