No part of the Netherlands was occupied by the Germans - the country
was neutral throughout. But all the parts of Belgium adjoining the
Dutch border *were* occupied, so it seems impossible that he could
have got to Vlissingen other than from German-occupied territory. I
think the most likely explanation is indeed that he was there awaiting
repatriation - seriously injured prisoners who were not likely to be
of any further military use were regularly exchanged through the
Netherlands.
According to Peter, upthread, "Soldiers Who Died" says that he died at sea.
This probably means that he was being shipped home because of wounds (the
battalion had only been at the front a couple of months so leave is
unlikely) or he was en route for the front. I hear we're actually getting
summer this weekend, so I'll try and find out what sank on 17 Nove 1915 next
week, when the weather resumes normal service.
A couple of people have emailed me to ask about the War Diaries I mentioned.
They're to be found here http://www.bedfordregiment.org.uk/ - select a
Battalion, then you'll find a hotlink to the ones kept for that Battalion.
Even if your interest in WWW is only general, rather than in specific
people, they make fascinating reading, and because they were written day by
day as it was happening, they bring the reality of the trenches to life.
