the quality of OCR conversion on which the indexing is based appears -
from a brief look - to be at least an order of magnitude better than
that used by The (London) Times archives.

From what I can see, articles whose titles are not annotated with a '$'
are completely free to read - without any need to register. [I read some
without registering, anyway!] The rest look as if they have to be paid
for $3.95 for a single article, or $16 for 10 articles - unless you have
a subcription (presumably paid for) for "Home Delivery" or "Times
Reader" - whatever they are.
I've found in the past that I could read a certain number of the
freebies without registering but then needed to so - but that wasn't
at all burdensome.

Just clear your cookies and start over, that's what I do.

Or set them at session only (with an exception for those sites
worthwhile to give longer permissions). Each time I restart my computer
almost all cookies are gone into oblivion. Tighter security (set to ask
permission for each and every cookie) is possible, but almost not workable.

Session cookies are what I do anyway. But I found that registering
with the site hasn't been problematic in any way. They haven't
bombarded me with Spam or anything. If I want to search through
numerous hits, I find it easier to be registered than keep deleting
cookies or starting again but others may prefer those options. If I
only want to check one or two articles, I don't need to register
anyway.

I suppose I *may* find that being registered brings some advantage in
terms of update information or special offers on paid-for articles. Or
perhaps not.
