Looking for Essex threw me at first! Thanks very much Colin. Looking at
the Google Earth view of the site, it now appears to be a car park!
Assuming the plot boundaries on the 1899 map are accurate and the
terrace was conventionally numbered from the north end (nearest town
centre) then the two vans by the A227 label on the sat view in google
maps appear to be where the house would have been.
My genealogy website <www.greywall.demon.co.uk/genealogy>
I believe it's possible to look at census records to work out which route
the collector took. Never done it myself but that might give you a clue as
to which end was number 1.
Something I've not tried yet, might be worth having a go.
"sensible" route and the sequence in the book might or might not
follow the route taken by the enumerator. I've seen some censuses
where the same sequence occurs in the book(s) for consecutive censuses
and a person's residence can be identified with some certainty even if
it is not described while others at worst look as if the schedules
have been chucked in a bucket and transcribed as they came out. The
best bet is to compare the same district with the census years either
side to determine how orderly the transcribing was done. By 1901 the
routine use of house-numbering possibly tended to steer the
enumerators to sort in that sequence merely to check if anywhere had
been missed.
Another method of determining the current numbering sequence of an
existing street is to use the http://www.landregisteronline.gov.uk/
website (available 0700-2400 UK time) and select the various premises
in the road using the "Map Enquiry". A check of the various satellite
photographs will usually indicate if the same group of buildings exist
now as e.g. 100 years ago.
