Continuing with my research into the family of William REED, I have now found him in the 1861 census, with son Shipley (12) and Albert (10 months). His new partner (unmarried) is Julia Hill, but I am having difficulty in reading her place of birth.

The census reference is RG9/110/60/51, and Julia Hill's entry is the penultimate. Ancestry has the place transcribed as Wisconsin, Allenton, but I feel that is incorrect.

To me it looks more like ???cestershire, Allerton.

I know there is an Allerton near Liverpool, but the county name does not look like Lancashire.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Well done finding him !

I think it's Lancastershire (!)

According to Google, there seem to be a few Allertons - one in North Yorkshire; Stone Allerton (or just Allerton) in Somerset; quite a few references to Allerton in 'the county of Lancaster', to name but a few - and the county name looks more like Worcestershire on second viewing.

Do you think William Reed did this deliberately ? To have chosen enumerators with such vile hands that they are consistently mistranscribed in census after census does seem to hint at forward planning.

Remember that the census was taken by distributing forms to the households to fill in. The enumerator's job was to transcribe those forms so the enumerator's books are one step removed from the original.

Maybe his writing was so bad (intentionally or otherwise!) that the enumerators were reduced to trying to reproduce scrawl they couldn't read. The consistency of mistranscription might result from Reed's own handwriting!
