It's no more or less unlikely than any other surname of the same frequency
in the relevant area. For instance where I live Boothroyd and variants
where fairly common, especially in my mother's home village. I have a
Boothroyd/Boothroyd marriage (although in my case I can take them back
another generation or two) and there's another in the parish and at least
one in the adjacent parish.
Here's a quote from something I posted in April:

"John MacKay married Georgina MacKay in 1865 in Sutherland
His parents were Campbell MacKay and Christian MacKay
Her parents were MacKay MacKay and Jane MacKay "

As far as I can see, the 2 families aren't related as far back as the
grandparents, at least.

Yes, well, I should have guessed there'd be plenty of that coming back
at me! And I do recall a lass I knew when I was a kid, she was called
Lesley Clark and she met this guy called Leslie Clarke :-)
So, I accept that it wouldn't be that unlikely to have Susannah Newton
marrrying John Newton. I still can't find a particularly likely John
Newton so my money's on the fib.
