Susannah's parents are given as William and Ann Newton. Surely if
Newton is her maiden name, it's unlikely to be her married name too,
but John Newton is given as Penelope's father.
It's no more or less unlikely than any other surname of the same frequency
in the relevant area. For instance where I live Boothroyd and variants
where fairly common, especially in my mother's home village. I have a
Boothroyd/Boothroyd marriage (although in my case I can take them back
another generation or two) and there's another in the parish and at least
one in the adjacent parish.
Here's a quote from something I posted in April:
"John MacKay married Georgina MacKay in 1865 in Sutherland
His parents were Campbell MacKay and Christian MacKay
Her parents were MacKay MacKay and Jane MacKay "
As far as I can see, the 2 families aren't related as far back as the
grandparents, at least.

Yes, well, I should have guessed there'd be plenty of that coming back
at me! And I do recall a lass I knew when I was a kid, she was called
Lesley Clark and she met this guy called Leslie Clarke :-)
So, I accept that it wouldn't be that unlikely to have Susannah Newton
marrrying John Newton. I still can't find a particularly likely John
Newton so my money's on the fib.
