Posting and hosting the Frequently Asked Questions

We've had rather too many flames recently aimed at newbies who simply didn't have access to the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), because they aren't posted here any more.

The FAQs were formerly administered by Barry Ruck, who has given permission for them to be posted and edited, with acknowledgements (see his message dated 09/09/07, in the thread "FAQ for this group?").

I am prepared to take on the job of posting FAQs every month to s.g.b, once again. I'm also prepared to be their interim maintainer, but would prefer to pass that task onto others who are more apt and expert.

Barry posted four separate FAQ groups: "Links", "Census", "General", and "What is the I.G.I?". To keep down the traffic, and to avoid the risk of newbies not realising that they're stumbled on only one of four articles they need to read, I propose to post one "Meta-FAQ" that points to all four, which I'm happy to host on a website.

Regarding the website, I am inclined to use a content management system. A colleague has recommended a free one to me that he uses a lot. It provides a very readable format for ordinary users. It also allows for FAQ maintainers to have password-controlled access, and needs minimal systems administration.

Acclaim, dismay, flames, compliments: all welcome! If you want to email, rather than posting here, don't forget to remove ".invalid" from the email address.

Finally, if you feel that you're an appropriate person to maintain one or more of the FAQ subjects, please get in touch too. I don't claim to be any kind of an expert, I'm just trying to do something positive for the group.
