Alexander Brown (abt 1874-1944) married Johan MacKay (abt 1872-1926) in Edinburgh in 1901. They were both teachers. Alexander had just taken up the post of Parish Schoolmaster for the parish of Whitsome & Hilton. At some point, they moved on to Chirnside, where he became Parish Schoolmaster, and Micahel Thomson took up the post in W&H.

When you wrote about the area on GENUKI you wrote...

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/BEW/Whitsome/history.html
"The parish schoolmaster was being paid 55 a year, with 26 in fees and 6 from other sources."

Where did that info come from and would it record who it was paid to?

That came from the New Statistical Account, dated July 1834 (thus about 70 years earlier) and co-written by the Parochial Schoolmaster of that time, George Scott (1814-1844). He's an interesting character who got into trouble for preaching for the Free Church in neighbouring parishes while still serving as an Elder of the Church of Scotland and Parochial Schoolmaster in Whitsome. His MI in the Parish Burial Ground reads "Casting his lot with the Free Church retired to Duns and occupied himself in administering to the sick and the poor." He must have been attached to Whitsome since, despite that fact that he and his wife both died outwith the parish (Haddington and Duns, respectively), they're buried there.
