" It is much to be lamented that the indiscretion
of children, or the unreasonable commands of
parents should produce the most distressing con-
sequences, and occasion it often to fall on the
innocent offspring of a rising generation. Pa-
rents are desirous of augmenting the fortunes of
their family by advantageous matches, and their
wishes are frequently cut off by the attachments
formed in the early years of life. In advanced age
they forget the passions of youth, and remember
only the means of ennoblng or aggrandizing those
to whom they gave birth.
It is certainly a duty encumbent in parents to
instill proper sentiments into youth, to prevent
as much as possible their degrading themselves by
an unworthy choice ; but as the happiness of their
future lives, when the indissoluble knot is tied is
frequently embittered by the obduracy of their
parents, it must be considered as right for them
to put the best face on what cannot be prevented,
and reconciliation is much more to be re-
commended than perverse obstinancy, which frequent-
ly produce feuds every worthy mind must deprecate."
