Everything you wrote may be true but you can't extend that to saying "Updating is required" FREE BMD is not "required" to do anything. Given that it is a volunteer effort with limited resources, they clearly have to prioritize development work. If they've decided to give higher priority to the vast majority of users rather than matching "the criteria that it should match" that is their choice.

If, for ethical and technical reasons, (no matter how valid) you have decided to eschew the evils of MS or non-compliant software in general that is your choice (and who am I to argue with that choice)

If this was a commercial product your obvious strategy would be to refuse to buy it, as it is a free product an equally obvious strategy is to refuse to use it.

You claimed that you were somehow representing the interests of the volunteers who have freely contributed tens of thousands of hours to the project. Yet, so far, not one of those volunteers has supported your position. You have every right to speak on your own behalf but you have no right to speak on theirs.

If you feel so strongly - don't use it! It is a gift. It is free. As non-contributors to the project neither you nor I have the right to dictate the form the free offering should take.
