ABSOLUTELY APPAALLING THE WAY SOME PEOPLE ARE TREATED ON THIS SITE,

ANSWER IS ALWAYS WE WILL NOT DISCUSS THIS MATTER ANY FURTHER
ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING....
You could stop paying your 2p a day in protest. I've also had several
technical issues with the site but have perservered and eventually
resolved them - remember its value is not in its technical aspects. The
number of unknown cousins its connected me to, which led in turn to
copies of photographs, letters, certificates and anecdotes, look-ups,
hunches and in some cases Christmas cards (Which can be viewed as good
or bad ;) being exchanged has far outweighed any annoyance I've felt
when my trees have disappeared, loaded in a poor format, or my account
has locked. I'd stick in there....
I agree
Genesreunited is far the best value for money of any subscription site
I have recieved copies of certificates and data worth at least 30 times
the annual subscription
I really ought to delete my out of date privatised gedcom
but it is just the bait on the hook
any enquiries get refered by me
now including as Living Jones or Living Smith all the Australian
cousins found by searching
for Jones born Raglan on GenesReunited
Jones, John b: 1816 in Raglan, Monmouth, England is our common ancestor

one great uncle left to resolve which the 1911 census should do when
available for searches

I have found Genes-Reunited an excellent resource - not necessarily
the technical functions of the site, which are occasionally slipshod
and sometimes just don't work, but the concept behind it.
It has been responsible for me making contact with first and second
cousins I didn't know I had, building working relationships with other
researchers, re-finding lost family members, especially overseas, and
- above all - breaking down brick walls. I now belong to two quite
large working groups on specific branches of my family which have been
built via Genes-Reunited contact, and it's amazing how "You are not
alone!" produces real results.
My only complaint - and this is completely beyond the scope of Genes-
Reunited and its customer services department - is that some
enquirers, particularly beginners who haven't got past their grannies,
expect you to lay bare ten years of hard work at a stroke. You know
the sort of thing: "I have a John Smith in my tree too - can I see
yours?" Such enquiries usually get interrogated fairly thoroughly
before I tick the access box!
I would agree that their hot-match facility is badly flawed (matching on
very slim criteria, and not showing enough details to you when you want to
weed out the false matches), but I think you're being a bit harsh on the
beginners. I, too, once had a smallish tree, and I did get a nice kick-start
by looking to the very helpful people who already had thousands of entries
in their trees. However, the reason for my slow start was that I'm
particularly thorough with my sources and references, and wanted to make
sure I got things as accurate as I could (some of the people with the very
large trees don't quote any references at all for their material, and some
have inadvertently copied errors from other trees). I now find myself in a
position where I can feed back updates, corrections, and extensions to all
the people that helped me previously.
