In the 1891 census what looks to be the same person gives his place of birth
as Thorne. This area has extensive bog/marshland. See:

So possibly dropped while the mother was working or born in some sort of
shanty dwelling used by bog workers. It probably amused him (especially if
he had downed a few in the pub) to claim he was born 'on the bog'.
The pub looks delightful and from the outside probably
much as it was in1901
Sunk a few pints in there while I was at the TTTE at RAF Cottesmore. Nothing
special.
