I am very suspicious of names with this kind of pattern

What 'pattern'? Why be more suspicious of a collection of Smain than,
say a similarly named bunch of Watkins?

Bit of quick googling would show where the Smain are likely to come
from and why they might have been in Shoreditch at the time they were.
After that, look up some Jewish genealogy, particularly sites to do
with Sephardim.
