Is there anything in it crossed out or altered?

Not in the case of the Special Reserve but the original enlistment form
stated SHORT SERVICE (One year or Duration of War) with 'One' crossed out
and 'Three' written in.

The original query has generated more response than I expected so, if anyone
is interested, I have placed the two sets of documents at:

AV.

It seems pretty much as I suggested. He enlists in the East Lancashire
Regiment
at Blackburn, and starts serving at the depot, Fulwood Barracks,
Preston. The
documentation states that he was posted to the 6th (Service)
Battalion, a Kitchener
New Army unit. As part of the Western Division, they were stationed on
Salisbury plain,
so when his medical condition is discovered, he is discharged at
Tidworth.

He then re-enlists in the Lancashire Fusiliers at Blackburn. The form
is a pre-war
Special Reserve attestation form. What is noteworthy is that he states
that he has six
years time expired service in the Royal Lancashire Militia, and gives
his number! This
isn't on the previous form, so he made an untrue statement. One
wonders why.

He then serves with the 3rd Battalion in the vicinity of Hull, from
where he is again
discharged.
