To a degree at least, I understand your angst, but the reality is that no matter how strongly you feel or how well you argue your case, the vast majority of software will be Windows based.
What has that got to do with it?
THERE IS NO NEED FOR DATA TO BE MADE AVAILABLE ONLY FOR MICROSOFT
USERS. THEY WILL NOT BE INCONVENIENCED ONE IOTA IF THE DATA IS MADE
AVAILABLE TO ALL ON THE ONE CD.
What is "to do with it" was my point.
Accepting you are correct in everything you say, it doesn't alter a FACT.
The FACT is that if you decide totally to eschew using Windows, you will be denied access to a lot of software.
You may think that is stupid, short-sighted or evil (or all three) - and you may well be right, but that doesn't change the facts one iota.
Is there the slightest chance that your arguments, no matter how cogent or how well presented, will cause a change in the next edition of the NBI or in software in general?
The problem is in this case that Jeff is talking about software while John is talking about pure data. The data can be formatted such that it can be used by the software on almost any platform. Take e.g. the Rich Textfile Format or the Portable Document Format.
