If I am not being attacked, talk is still an option, and there is no
need for lethal toys for boys.
That wasn't even true in WWII. We nearly lost the battle of Britain because
we didn't have enough trained pilots and we couldn't train new ones fast
enough. These days it takes decades to design new aircraft and years to
train pilots (even defensive aircraft and crew). Should we wait for a war to
start then start building and training them?
How would you apply your arguments to the Balkans war? Harrier pilots there
were bombing bridges to keep fighting parties apart. No toys, years of
preperation and training required for that then? At the time everyone was
concerned about co-lateral damage (civillian deaths) because the bombs
wern't very accurate. Perhaps those civilian deaths didn't matter Don?
Personally I wish the RAF had had the money to buy better more accurate
smart bombs from the Americans.
How about the Falklands war? How much notice did we get there?
By the way the Red Arrows make do with OLD planes because modern planes are
too expensive. Most of their aircraft are Hawks dating from the late 1970's
or early 1980's.
