That's good news. I was hunting for a death cert the other day, having
only vague information, and my best guess was an index page that's
nearly all illegible. As long as they've got the certs they should be
able to recreate it. If age of death is included it will make my task
less hopeless.
There's more than one copy of the GRO indices anyway, so it's easy
enough even now to reproduce any particular volume, but entries that
were missing will remain missing so your only chance of finding a
particular event would be to go to the relevant register office.
In this case, 1850-51, the entry may not be missing as such. The
likely index page is completely illegible in parts - unless a better
copy exists than those on FreeBMD and Ancestry. I can't use an
individual register office because I don't know which one. He had the
temerity to die shortly before the census. He was probably around the
London area, perhaps in Battersea or Chelsea, but could have been
anywhere - he worked in the building trade.
Try checking the books at the FRC, or mention the name and perhaps
someone who is visiting may check that page for you.
Best wishes
