I can't see that telling someone how to obtain a birth certificate is
"severely OT" since the GRO Indexes are online in several places and
the records are public, otherwise why are we all here at all?
If the enquirer was asking for a current address for this chap I might
share your suspicions but giving someone the GRO reference for a birth
over 60 years ago and suggesting they obtain the certificate seems
reasonable. If he's chasing him for some other reason, I doubt he's going
to learn much from that.
We tell beginners how to research and get certificates all the time.
What's the difference between a birth in 1945 and, say, 1895?
A very great deal. A person born in 1895 will be dead by now. A person born in 1945 would be a mere 62 and very likely alive.
But the point you are missing is that the OP didn't ask how to do genealogy. To which the simple and sensible answer would be 'go to GENUKI and read the Beginner's Guide written by somebody who knows what they are talking about.'
The OP asked for information about a particular living person, and did so without giving any identifying information about himself whatsoever. Furthermore he is another who thinks that using a bloody silly pseudonym and posting from and anonymous address will get him private information about another without giving any information about himself or why he wants to know about that particular other. Furthermore, this prat appears out of a clear blue sky with his demands. He has no record whatever of contributing anything.
If he is looking for a living individual there are other, very well publicised, places where he can look for people who have put up their own details because they want to be found; and for the OP to put up his details so that he can be found. That would be the open and honest thing to do. And that is precisely what the OP doesn't do.
He is yet another of the long dreary line of dubious characters who treat the people on this and other newsgroups as connable fools incapable of realising that the whole of searching for living people is bedevilled by parties with ulterior, and at times physically dangerous, reasons for searching.
How often does the warning have to be written?
every time a flock of newbies drops in
electoral rolls and telephone books are the basic people finders
historical phone books are in some central libraries and the Metropolitan Archives has the most complete set
