Thanks to everyone who took time to reply to my post.
And I'm sorry if it caused any severe differences of opinion re
occupations..:-)
Not knowing a lot about my BROWN line is so very frustrating. I have very
little to go on other than the details of my Nana's birth cert and the
marriage cert of her parents, William Brown and Catherine Frances Chiocchi
aka Chalkey, as well as the names of Nana's siblings which appear to be twin
of the family in the 1901 census I suspect may be relations. With this in
mind, I leaning towards the Robert Brown / Emily McDonald marriage would
follow suit.
Yes, I could get certificates (not cheap from Oz)

But the information gained from them leaves the pathetic English
Certs. for dead.
Ken
for the Brown / McDonald
clan but this would probably be of little assistance in linking them to my
William Albert Brown and father, Robert.
On William's marriage cert he gave father's occupation as 'labourer' - which
could be anything and everything.
But if gut feelings count for anything, I suspect my lot and the McDonalds
line are linked / related.
Any tips for proving or disproving same?
Many, many thanks

Hi AllThe one key word is 'may'. You have no way of getting to 'know'. So there
Just want to put out feelers as to whether you suspect I may be on the
right track.
My maternal great-grandfather William Albert Brown was born c1884 in (I
am lead to believe) Liverpool or Everton. He married Catherine Frances
Chiocchi aka Chalkey at St Polycarp's, Everton 9/7/1905. Children:
Emily
Lily 11/7/1912 (my Nana)
Mary aka May 1914
Norah 1916
Catherine F 1920
Maggie
Tommy
Freddy
Albert.
William was a carter by trade, had a brother named Robert, named his
father as Robert on his marriage certificate and a Robert John Brown was
witness on said certificate. William was an Orangeman and apparently
marched with the Black and Tans. Other than this I know nothing. Brown is
a devil of a name to trace at the best of times.
But on the 1901 census I found a possible family for William at 102
Gordon St, Everton in the parish of St Polycarp's: RG 13 / 3472
Mary McDonald, widow/head, age 78, born Liverpool
William Brown, grandson, single, age 18, occupation hard to read, born
Liverpool
Mary McDonald, wife, married, age 39, occupation: charring, born
Liverpool
Emily McDonald, daur, single, age 17, born Liverpool
Mary McDonald, daur, single, age 14, born Liverpool
Lily McDonald, daur, single, age 10, born Liverpool
Maggie McDonald, daur, single, age 8, born Liverpool
Annie McDonald, daur, single, age 2, born Liverpool
Robert Brown, nephew, single, age 22, occupation: hard to read, born
Liverpool
I'm not claiming this family as mine but I'd be interested in hearing
if anyone suspects that I may be on to something here.
has to come a point where the similarities pile up, you cannot find any
other families nearly as similar, and you decide on balance of
probabilities to take what you have found 'as though' it was true.
So long as you fairly indicate residual doubt and don't claim to know for
sure, you are on as safe ground as anybody else in genealogy.
