Re: Coroners Inquests

From: "Mary Beaumont" <marybeau@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Is it possible to obtain a copy of a Coroners Inquest documents in
England ? Phoebe Wisbey drowned at Hadleigh, Essex in1871 and
subsequently a coroners inquest was held at Maldon on 13th November
1871. Who should I contact for the information ?<

The survival of coroners' records is extremely patchy, as legally they can
be destroyed after only 15 years.

Some have found their way into county records offices but, on the whole,
you would be much better off looking for a report in a local newspaper.
Local papers usually carried inquest reports in the 19th century. Contact
the Essex County Record Office at Chelmsford and ask them what films
they have of Essex newspapers.
