It's been in the news recently as second most popular (if all
spellings are included) and likely to hit the top spot. Google News
gets many hits e.g.

The popularity seems to be because it's commonly given as an honorific
first name in Muslim families - it isn't necessarily the name that the
person is actually known by. Some seem to have tried to make a bigger
deal out of this than it's worth.
On a comparable theme (FWIW), many children in anti-clerical
republican parts of Spain had Maria as an first name as they had to
have something Catholic to be registered. Russian names were then
popular as the "real" first name to show hostility to Franco.
