After finding genbrit through the Oxford list's recommendation, I've
enjoyed it for a few weeks. But I've now had enough of the name-calling
and generally bad tone and will unsubscribe. What a shame that people
can't be polite to one another -- not really a very big thing to ask, is
it?

I fully agree with you.
It seems these days that if you disagree with someone it is apparently mandatory to abuse them, particularly if you have no reasoned arguments to put forward.
With some news groups there would appear to be considerable competition to see who can put the most swear words and abusive language in a single post.
As a result, many people like you unsubscribe and no longer help those in need, with the result that they are then left at the mercies of the self appointed "experts"

PS my neighbour is a Treadwell, until I moved here I'd never met the name before!

From experience this newsgroup seems to be like a bunch of friends working toward a common goal. When appropriate you can get good advice, however like asking friends for advice you will probably get a little ribbing and insults along with the advice. Don't give up on a good source of information.
