Seriously I was under the impression that was the way it was normally
done and hence the copy I had contained the signatures of the actual
people concerned. Certainly appears to be on the other certificates that
I have got from local registry offices in the past.

I would certainly agree with your impression.

Not just me then :-)

I also agree that the signature very definitely looks like June.

I found a mother named Marina in the 18th century registers for one
parish I was looking at recently, didn't think it was right, an
archivist agreed and thought it was Mariha as a fancy Maria of which
name there was many there. It was Marina though. Unusual for that
time but it's a name that actually dates back to the 14th century.

So although June may seem to be unlikely, it could be correct and the
incumbent has (incorrectly) assumed that it should have been Jane and
that's what's been passed through to the GRO becaue that's what was in
the register.

Until I can get more evidence one way or the other, I'm going to assume she
is June on the grounds the woman knew what her own name was and whoever
filled in the main part of the form was demonstrably not paying proper
attention.

Not sure where I'm likely to get more evidence though, might be worth
checking the local newspapers, her husband was a reasonably well off wine and
spirits merchant, the family firm was situated at 24 the Pavement in the
centre of York.
