Thanks to everyone for your help re Richard Dean. Many of you suggestI think you need to realize that people moved around quite a bit, but not
that there were 2 Richards at 20 Camden Street, but the puzzle continues
so any help as follows gratefully received:
1. If 2 Richards lived at Camden Street - where is Richard married to
Margaret in 1841 as Ive had no luck tracing him and they married in 1840.
Richard DOB 1814, a weaver. They are living in New Castle Street in 1851.
2. Joseph - my Gx3 Grandfather. All the census returns state he was born
in 1822/3 in St Lukes, but I have had no luck finding Joseph in the parish
records so far.
In 1851 he is living at 13 Hope Street, Bethnal Green with his wife and
children. In the same house a couple of names above is a Sarah Dean and a
visitor Maria Moie? - Sarah is born 1783 and is a weaver same as Joseph.
I have had much trouble finding Joseph in 1841 as there are a quite a few
and the rounding of ages makes it fun. I did find a Joseph 15yrs living
with a family of which the Head was Sarah - Fetter Lane, St. Dunstan In
The West, Middlesex, but cannot guarantee that it is correct.
So my first question is - am I clutching at straws believing that Sarah is
Joseph's family and if she is - is she likely to be his mother or
grandmother?
Secondly, were the parishes of St Lukes and Bethnal Green next to each
other - I wonder if Joseph tried to improve his station by stating St
Lukes when he was in fact born in Bethnal Green.
Finally, any pointers for finding Joseph in the Parish Records?
Many thanks in advance for all help received.
Best wishes
necessarily very far. They rented accommodation, and as the family grew they
got a bigger place, and when they left, it was back to somewhere smaller. I
doubt if there was any prestige living in a particular parish. The fact that
you can't find them in a census might mean they simply aren't there, a
landlord living in a house where he is letting out rooms might not tell the
enumerator. I have families which were not only in different places in
successive censuses, but moved at least a couple of times in between. And
one family that had 5 children in North Kensington, and the sixth, in the
middle in Ashby de la Zouch, Derbyshire - explain that!
Have you tried St Leonard's Shoreditch, this is one of the most populous
parishes and its between St Lukes Old Street and St Mathews Shoreditch
I still think your two Richards are father and son
