A while ago i posted a query re the two brave souls listed below, as
to how they ended up in church village.
After getting help form all over the world a big thank you to everyonw
who helped and who wish to remain private...
134578 Fg Off Ernest Reginald Victor Roberts RAFVR was a member of the
Personnel Holding Unit at Morecambe when he was admitted on 30 June
1944 with a serious illness ( from which he sadly succombed on 30 July
1944) to the RAF General Hospital, Church Village, Pontpridd.
77820 Fg Off Guy Thomas Harvey from Zimbabwe who was serving on No 6
MT Coy, was admitted to the same Hospital on 20 July 1944 with a
serious illness from which he sadly lost his life on 01 August 1944.
After much digging i came across the following information
The RAF took over the hospital from the local community in 1942 it was
built in 1936
Raf st Athan orthopedic unit closed in 1943 possibly after heavy
bombing and transferred to East Glamorgan
1943 Maxo Facial unit opened
June 44 270 casualties from Normandy landings are brought over, Church
village is 12 miles from Cardiff
1945 RAF TB ISOLATION UNIT (just around the corner from East
Glamorgan,) opened much to the horror of the local council...
So why you may ask would someone like Fg Off Ernest Reginald Victor
Roberts be transferred from Morecombe which is bloody miles away
TB perhaps???
We may never know why they died but alt least we can make some
informed guesses
Regards
Pete
