Postscript:
I have just noted from the RFC User Group minutes and the GRO website that
it is now planned to close the Family Records Centre ground floor as well
as the upstairs by April 2008, e.g. there will be no physical place to
order (or collect) indexes and certificates.

As the GRO in Islington has never been difficult when ordering modern
certificates in person, this means that its doubly important to stamp out
any attempt by petty officials to restrict access to recent certificates
over the phone or internet.
Well done for putting your foot down.
Bob.

Two thirds of the certs I order are direct from local registry.
offices, the rest from ONS by phone. I ordered two from ONS today,
after getting a marriage cert from them and finding the DOBs. This
afternoon I was awoken (from my midday nap) by a call from ONS with
the request for a full DOB and parents names for one of these. I
stated of course that I didn't know, hence my need for the cert. I was
told it was likely my request would be refused because the birth was
within the '50 year rule'. I told him that I already had his two
children's certs. and he sounded shocked. He ended by telling me he
would pass my request to his supervisor and that if I wasn't sent the
certificate I would get a partial refund.
I was amazed and informed him that the cert. must be sent or a full
refund and explanation. I have read on here that the online form
requires a full DOB but I have never used that option and have had
many certs' over the past few years from them.
Has anyone else had this experience?
