There seems to be a lot of ill informed prejudice against
hunting. I have never hunted and would never want to
but I can see both sides of the argument.
It's certainly a mistake to think that all who hunt are toffs.
Are there any foxes left in the countryside to hunt? They all seem to be
in my suburban back garden and other gardens in the road! Certainly,
"our" fox (and there may be more than one) calls round every night for
its supper and is a better rubbish disposal unit than anything I've ever
come across.
The fox hunting argument is one that leaves me supremely uninterested
- and I do mean uninterested and not disinterested. It seems to me that
more hot air has been wasted over this one issue than any other. In my
opinion, the two sides deserve one another. The antis forget that foxes
are cruel creatures that kill simply for the sake of killing and cause much
damage to farmers, while the hunters do tend to live up to the image of
what dear old Oscar called "the unspeakable in pursuit of the
uneatable".
I suppose it's the fact that foxes can be beautiful creatures to look at
because they look like sleek dogs that makes the antis come over all
soppy and indignant. If it were rats or creepy crawlies that were being
hunted no-one would give a toss.
