"Emigrate FROM" and "Immigrate TO".
Birds Migrate.
This "Peter" is a very dull fellow -- and a sock puppet.
What are some of the other names he uses?
As well as an Illiterate.
DSH
It's migrate. Indeed the Cambridge English dictionary even provides
examples for people as thick as you:
"If people migrate, they travel in large numbers to a new place to
live temporarily:
Mexican farm workers migrate into the US each year to find work at
harvest time.
The poster Hines was referring to was writing about a few members of
her family --recent immigrants, in other words -- and not "large
numbers" who traveled to a new place to live "temporarily."
It couldn't be more clear.
Clarity just isn't your strong point is it?
From what I've read of your writing, I guess that people ask you thatquite often.
Try looking up other dictionary definitions of the word "migrant",
assuming of course that you know how to do such a thing and aren't
just Hines glove puppet - I'll leave it to your imagination where his
hand is.
Why should I look up other meanings when you have been kind enough to
supply one that is incorrect?
Know why should MY definition be incorrect? - Because it doesn't agree
with your definition. That is a circular argument
You took it upon yourself to correct somebody who used the word
correctly.
Hines didn't use the word correctly.
There was such a thing as "The Great Migration," which was the first of
several "Brain Drains" for Britain. This took place during the mid-to
latter part of the 17th century at which time Britain lost
approximately two percent of its population.
And your point is?
The eugenic consequences of this outflow is sometimes painfully
obvious.
During the so-called "Great Migration" many middle- and upper-middle
class families left England for America and other places. Many of the
Americans Hines is talking about -- who have Plantagenet ancestry --
are descended from the group that settled in the northeastern part of
the United States.
Class - obviously doesn't necessarily bestow inteligence, does it?
It tends to reflect intelligence; it doesn't cause it.
Class does not reflect intelligence - calss is a result of an accident
of birth. Indeed, many people suggest that the present royal family
isn't among the brightest in the bunch (I make no comment personally,
not having met any of them)
Unintelligent people are less likely to seek education, or make a good
living
What has that to do with class?
They tend to have less stable lives.
Perhaps you would like to explain exactly what you mean?
Another word you seem to be unable to understand the meaning of is
"illiterate". The Canbridge dictionary gives the meaning of this as:
"unable to read and write:"
What does the "Can-bridge dictionary" have to say about "subliterate?"
So obviously Hines doesn't understand the meaning of the term
"illiterate"
Are you saying that you think I am Hines?
That's a pretty silly assumption.
Why is that a silly assumption?
If you don't know, it's not worth my time to explain it to you.
You claim to be smart, and yet you are unable to figure out something
as simple as that.
No, I think it is an assumption that may prove to be correct - it's
hard to imagine that there are two mpeople as stupid and pompous as
you pair of morons
However, I do know the meaning of the term sub-literate, you
apparently do not.
The two definitions given are:
1. Not interested in or able to read artistic literature.
2. Of, relating to, or being language that is dialectal, slangy, or
full of jargon.
Those definitions are from a free, online dictionary.
And your point is?
The point is that you get what you pay for.
You really are detached from reality aren't you?
Webster's unabridged defines it as "imperfectly literate."
Well, which one is correct? Or are they BOTH correct?
They may indeed both be correct. What is wrong is for you to correct
somebody when he has not made an error
Hines has made a number of errors, this is only one.
Do they provide a descriptor for a person who cannot read -- without
altering the meaning of -- words as they are written on a page?
No, they do not.
Which words of Hines did I alter the meaning of?
By ignoring the context in which the word was used, you claimed
--incorrectly -- that he should have used "migrate" instead of
"emigrate."
So I didn't alter anything. I suggested to the half-wit Hines that he
had used the wrong word - not too sure how that became altering
meaning.
I can only assume you
must be Hines for you to have such an in depth knowledge and
understanding of his posts (nobody else understands them)
That would be you.
I think not - now run off and play and in future don't use words that
you don't understand the meaning of - it makes you look almost as
stupid as Hines - or are you indeed him?
You may find Hines disagreeable, but he is certainly not stupid.
Oh, I (and apparently many others) think he is indeed very stupid. I
also think you are very stupid and probably an embarassment to your
family
I think you are less intelligent than I am, that it probably runs in
your family, and that you also have significant character-related
problems.
Thinking really isn't your strong point is it - oh to see the video of
you trying to put a pair of trousers on - "National Lampoon does Q" -
it would be the box office hit of the year.
