If you wanted to know when a particular house was built (in a small village

A matter of luck, I should think. I had a look for my area. I found
only one house existing - and that certainly wasn't built then! I
happen to know that the present house was built ca1870 though there
are signs of an earlier house on the site.
But there's no sign that my house existed, although it's certainly
older than that. I suspect it was only occupied as a temporary
grazier's shelter (or something) and thus didn't count. It was
extended for permanent occupation about that time (judging from the
brickwork) but houses have come and gone and later censuses don't give
individual addresses. You win some, you lose some.
