I was very lucky. My Reusse family's forenames varied considerably on
records but the surname remains consistent. I think they must have
been determined on the point. It must be one of the easiest "one-name
studies", at least for the name in Britain. The first Reusse arrived
from France ca1860 and died 1870.
I suppose there is no link with the mini-principality in Germany, where
all the sons of the family were named Henry/Heinrich. Must have been
confusing when one of them was naughty, or was next in line for a
haircut or a dose of laxative.
Reuss doesn't seem uncommon in censuses - I assume they're of German
origin. There are also plenty called Roos and Rooss (and Ruiz) But the
British Reusses (ca1860-95) are (I think) all mine and a complete
list. I wonder if the name was a French version of a German original.
