At the moment I have been using Genes Re-united to input my familyYou should download as many demos as you can and try them - we all seem to
History and wonder if there is a better way of keeping all the records
which are growing quickly. I've seen some CD packages for Family Trees
but was a bit dubious. I would want to save the records onto disc or
DVD as well for in case of computer failure. Any suggestions please?
have different requirements, and software selection can, amazingly,
tempers. That said, I use Family Tree Maker for several reasons. It doesnot
automatically write to the cd burner, but it does automatically backup to
the hard disc every time it's turned off. I then use my normal DVD burning
software to include the file on a backup disc.

Four years ago I tried just about every free and trial program I could get
my hands on. I didn't do a full test of all the features but I also ended up
using FTM. To backup you just need to copy the .FTW file to a CDR or DVDR
etc.
However if you are like me you will also have a lot of other stuff on your
PC. Stuff like Favorite URLs or Contacts etc. Much better to set up
something to backup your whole PC regularly.
Twice in the past 5 years I've had total hard drive failures. The first time
it was a nightmare. Yes I had all my data backed up on DVD and all my
programs on their original CDs but there was a lot of other stuff that had
been downloaded or updated online (Windows, antivirus S/W and numerous
utilities etc). Then there was all the settings for my ISP, email,
newsgroups, favorites, desktop icons etc etc). It took nearly a week of
spare time to get it all installed and configured again.
After that experience I decided to buy an external hard drive and now my
entire PC is backed up onto that drive every night. All done automatically.
The external drive is big enough to keep the previous 7 copies so I can
restore my PC to exactly the condition it was at any day in the previous
week. It's still possible for the both the external hard drive AND the one
in the PC to fail at the same time, so I still need to copy the backup onto
DVDs about once a month.
When I had the second hard drive failure I was able to get it back exactly
the way it was within three hours - and most of that time was spent going to
the computer shop to get a replacement hard drive and installing it.
