Hi.....here is an interesting 1881 census entry that could bring to mind many scenarios! Either Alice perhaps had an "affair" with the lodger JOHN HENRY SMITH and produced your John Henry in 1887 or just was fond of him and named her and John's son after him.....John Henry Smith *could* also possibly have been a relative:

G'day list
I have been trying to trace the family of John Henry Finch, and so far no
luck in finding anyone that fits the bill.
The info I have on him comes from his marriage certificate here in
Australia. He married Constance Laura Prudence Eva Tevelein known as Lee in
1927. On the Marriage certificate it states that he was 40 at the age of
marriage and that he was born in Limehouse, England. His parents are noted
as being John Arthur Finch (deceased) General Labourer, and Alice Norah
(Surname unknown).
Info from his sons are. John Henry supposedly arrived in Australia as a
Stewart on a Passenger Liner and jumped ship in Melbourne. He also
supposedly served in WW1 and talked to his son about being in France in the
trenches. I have had a look here for any WW1 record on him but have so far
turned up nothing. Also have looked at ships absconders for the period and
also tuned up nothing, although I could have missed something.
This is all the info I have at this time.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Marc.
