Has anyone tried accessing the Digital Library of Historical Directories, run by Leicester University, recently?
Sometimes it used to be unbelievably slow, but now I cannot even get the website, www.historicaldirectories.org, to
open any more, and I've been trying on and off for a couple of days. The little green blobs get about halfway along
the indicator bar and then it just hangs up.

I heard a talk a year or more ago by one of the people behind it, in which it was said that their Lottery funding had
run out and therefore they wouldn't be able to maintain it for much longer. Maybe that's what has happened. If so,
it's very sad, for it was a terrific resource.

Can't get it to download at all. Bummer.

I would have thought a little effort would have persuaded Ancestry or 1837online to take it over. Better to
pay-to-view than lose altogether ...

I expect Dave Mayall will tell me it's not as simple as that, in which case I shall defer to his infinitely superior
knowledge of online databases <VBG>

It's final news release in January 2005 stated that it will run for the next 3 years.
