No Hard Feelings

I was in two minds about sending this. I'd rather let sleeping dogs lie as they were, but I see that Eve has no intention of doing that. So, apologies, this isn't aimed at any one person in particular, just a vent of my feelings. I hope you read with an open heart and mind.

I just wanted to take the time the write a little post if I may. I don't want any bad feelings to perpetuate any further, I'd like to try and put this nonsense to bed and put an end to the complaining posts. People are still doing it, even now.

I don't wish to fall out with anyone, and I hope people havent been rubbed up the wrong way, or have taken offence, but if I may be allowed to explain a few things, hopefully things will be a bit clearer.

Needless to say, I have been a tad unhappy about the reactions and attitudes of a minority of posters of this group. There seems to be a certain proportion of net police, nit pickers, people making assumptuous conclusions that are way off base, and generally, people thinking they're better than anybody else whatever they say because of their history in genealogy and cannot be argued with.

First I get useless definitions, ie, it is explained to me that a death duty register is a register of duties, then Im expected to be thankful after my actual question wasn't answered. I went off and did my own research and posted my understandings to the group, which is then misinterpreted as me actually lying and pretending that I knew all along.

My posts are then widely misinterpreted. Probably something to do with the way I phrase my questions. But needless to say, when I ask a question about the completness of the IGI and the interactions and time constraints involved with visiting R.O's and FHC's, the last thing I expected was to get a deluge of posts defining what the IGI in what can only be construed as a newbies guide, followed by by lots of ridiculous arguing over semantics over whether it's a transcription, extraction or index.

When I say that I do actually know what the IGI is, I get rancid posts saying "well I bow to your greater experience", then criticisnig my intellignce - "I would have expected anyone of average
intelligence...to work out why you need to search those registers". Yet the simple case is, I do research the registers, and I know the benefits. That was never my question either.

Even when I talk about the semantics of extraction/indexing/transcribing and suggest transcribing isn't such a bad word, at the very least, the IGI is a limited transcribe, Im then told what the IGI contains, even though I've said I've used the IGI extensively and KNOW what it contains. Grandma and Eggs come to mind.

I have never made a case for not wanting to look through the parish registers. Again, this is just false assumptions, bought about by what people read into things, what THEY think I imply, not what is actually read.

My posts are misinterpreted because of a potential wording issue, a
momentary brain fart if you will, like, the difference between a transcription and extraction, then it is later explained that the IGI is both a transcription and extraction and everything in between and more on top...

Then it is assumed that what I actually meant, is that the IGI is made
solely of transcriptions/extractions and I get heavily corrected on it,
wheras, I said no such thing. Charani then excuses herself on this very
issue herself. I question how this is fair - though, maybe Im not allowed to answer due to her "40 years of experience".

It is then assumed that I actually don't visit FHC's or R.O's, and I'm
being told to go and visit them. I do visit them though. Not one person
has asked my researching habbits, they've just made more assumptions and criticised me for it.

Personally I hope this has all been a huge misunderstanding. If I have said something out of place, and I hope I havent, then I sincerely apologise.

However I do not want to fall out with anybody in this group. This is a great group, and I've had a lot of help and pointers in the past, present, and hopefully future.

I just ask, please try and be open minded, and take posts at face value. Please try not to put your own spin on them, make your own interpretations, and class a person as being ignornant.

Cheers
Simon
