A somewhat similar situation is the 1841 census. You have
people living in the same house with the same surname, but no
relationship is shown amount the inhabitants. What can be
inferred:
* the persons living in the same house with the same surname are
related.
Highly probable, but not certain. The lodger might happen to have the same
name.
* it is pretty strong evidence, but no proof that two similar aged
children in the same house with the same surname are siblings.
(of course, there are other possibilities).
Certainly are: I have two people of similar age and identical name in the
same house. They are first cousins. The probability of siblings rises if
there is only one set of possible parents in the house.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The two weddings were not a coincidence, there were several
other weddings that day, but these weddings were consecutive
in the parish register. Also the names of the witnesses do not
appear on no other marriages. This all had have been planned
in advance. Also, I know from other sources of information
that both couples are of similar ages meaning the only reasonable
possibilities are that they are either siblings or cousins. Siblings
being more likely case, but cousins can not be ruled out. More
evidence is needed to select among the two cases.
Here's something else I think can be inferred: the relationship
of John to Betty Barnes is the same relationship as that
between Jenny and Andrew Nuttal. (I know there are other
possibilities, but the other possibilities are much less likely.)
I don't think that follows from anything you've shown here: one pair could
be siblings, the other, cousins, with about the same probabaility.
I have some evidence that Jenny and Andrew are siblings, if
I can get "proof", then this would make a very strong case
that John and Betty Barnes are also siblings.
Yes, if I assume John and Betty are siblings and that Jenny
and Andrew are siblings I can find baptism records that match
up nicely with both couples. Without this assumption, there are
too many possibilities to make progress.
So, anyways, I am trying to build my case out of many pieces
of information, none of which standalone prove anything.
These names are very common where I am researching and I have
been unable to confirm or delay their relationship through using
other sources.
Unfortunately, the more there are, the less likely it is that a given two
are siblings.
