Using 1837online I searched for the birth entry of my wife's mother's
birth certificate details known were:- Name Mair Olwen Jones
DOB 1/1/1910
Found one entry under these parameters, place of birth shown as
Llandilofawr with reference YOB 1910, Qtr MAR, District LLANDILOFAWR, Vol
11a, Page 1343
Paid my money and a certificate was produced.
This was for the birth of a Mair Olwen Jones born to William and Mary
Lizzie Jones (formerly Morgans) on the 3rd February 1910.
Near, but not correct! Her mother was definitely not Mary Lizzie Jones,
her name was Eleanor Jones. Both are now deceased. All my wife knows is
that her father was killed in WW1. Looking for anyone named Jones is
rather difficult in Wales! My wife says the her mother had an older
sister Helen Jones but has no idea how much older she might have been.
Any kind soul out there have any helpful suggestions please?
Should I return the certificate and ask for a refund?
Unless you asked for any checks to be done, it looks as though you
were sent what you asked for.
Was the birth in the registration district that you expected?
If not, try writing to the one local to where you expect the birth
to have been and see if they have it.
Was she known by any other name? Sometimes people
are called by their middle name instead of their first name, so
perhaps she's under Olwen Mair instead.
Could the Mair be short for Mary?
Sometimes a name is added later, and the birth registered
with only one first name.
Sometimes a birth isn't registered until the next quarter, so
it might be worth just checking that. Although in this case
it would be later than expected.
If you know the local newspaper, it's possible that the birth
on the first day of January may have been mentioned in that,
under 'New Year Babies' or similar.
If her father's first name is unknown, it should be on her
marriage certificate even if he had died before then.
Best wishes
