My excel spreadsheet is the equivalent of index cards - I list each person -
their parents, spouse, occupation, dob, dom, dod, locations for each and age
for each, age for each census and gro references for birth, marriage and
death and I colour code when I have the certificates.
It works well as it can calculate quickly which is useful for double
checking purposes with gro references etc.
The only downside about my spreadsheet is its only for direct ancestors, I
found it impossible to put in details of siblings, children etc. as it
became too big and unwieldy.
I also use a family tree program to put everything including details about
addresses on census records, marriage certs etc and all the other details
that you find when researching.
Hope this helps?
