The List and Index Society has published an index to "Royal Navy
Lieutenants' Passing Certificates 1691-1902" (by Bruno Pappalardo).
Unfortunately I only have the A-H volume on my shelf at the moment.
I've never actually seen a passing certificate, but I understand that
(if you can find it) it should list all the ships your man served on as
a midshipman. Possibly other information also. Not, of course, his
career after becoming lieutenant but before arriving on the Albany.
