To confirm Graeme's comment, he was a Gunner (the equivalent of
Private) in the Royal Artillery.

At that time, the Royal Artillery was split into Brigades, and each
Brigade had a number of Batteries. As far as I can tell, the 6th, 7th,
and 8th Batteries of 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery were the only RA
units based in Corfu in March 1862, having arrived in August the
previous year. Detachments were located at Zante, Santa Maura, Ithaca
and Cephalonia.

The on-line catalogue only gives the names of a small percentage of
personnel, and with regard to the Discharge Documents in the WO 97
series, only those men discharged to pension up to 1854 have been
indexed by name. To find men who were discharged after that point,
you'll have to root through the cardboard boxes of loose discharge
papers at Kew.

See the guide at
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14
for more information on the WO97 series of Discharge Papers.

The Muster Rolls and Pay Lists of these three Batteries can also be
searched, and these give a nominal roll of all personnel in the unit,
together with how much they were paid, and other interesting details.
See
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=16
for a guide to these records.

The following piece should give the Muster Books for the three
Corfu-based batteries up to the end of March 1862:

WO 10/2466
Ionian Isles: Brigade:3, Battalion:6,7,8
Malta: Brigade:3, Battalion:1-5
Plymouth: Brigade:3, Battalion:6-8
Shoebury Ness: Brigade:3, Battalion:2,3
Woolwich: Brigade:3, Battalion:1-8
1861 Apr. - 1862 Mar.

The reference to "Battalion" in the National Archives catalogue entry
above is likely to be wrong, and I believe it should read "Battery".

The Embarkation and Disembarkation Returns for 1861 in WO 25/1171 and
WO 25/1191 may also be of interest, although I'm not sure how much
detail was recorded.
