Subject: It's horrible, says Zimbabwean, as country hit by four days
of blackouts
It's only horrible for you. Most Zimbabawians don't use electricity.
From The Cape Argus (SA), 18 July[snip..]
By Thabo Mabaso
For the past four days, Zimbabwe has been hit by an electricity
blackout
that has plunged the country into darkness and exacerbated the
suffering of
people already reeling from an ever-deepening economic and political
crisis.
"The power cuts have forced families to use firewood to cook. The cost
of firewood is, however, beyond the means of most families.
Garbage ! There are massive supplies of fire wood throughout the
country. If the price was 'too high' the millions of unemployed
could become rich harvesting and selling it. You can fool the readers,
but not the market.
Mugabe's majority support in the rural areas is understandable,
since they only need some salt and sugar & soap are luxuries.
Much more important for them is the rain for their crops,
and how far they have to walk to fetch daily water.
Mugabe just needs to order a few container-loads of new
bank notes and distribute it strategically and he can retain
his popularity.
You have to live african village life to realise that all a hosehold
needs is a badza steel-blade to make a hoe and a water container.
A panga can be borrowed.
They might have a spoon, knife, cup & plate if they are aquisative.
The rest is derived from the environment.
